The Best Movies I Saw in 2020

Sunday, January 3, 2021
2020 in movies is always gonna be remembered as a weird year. The coronavirus shut everything down for a bit, so a good chuck of movies that were coming out in the winter and spring were postponed. And I don’t have the money to get every movie I wanted to see on VOD, so this is what I could watch.

Here are the best movies I saw in 2020.
  • Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)
    • This was just a thrill ride, and it was a great example of what a small stakes comic book movie can be. The characters were smartly written and developed and I'm looking forward to what director Cathy Yan does next.
  • Selah and the Spades
    • The debut feature from writer/director Tayarisha Poe, about what happens when you know you have to cede your power when you move on, but you can't allow yourself to.
  • Palm Springs
    • A great romantic comedy starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti. One of the best uses of the Groundhog Day time loop in recent memory.
  • Yes, God, Yes
    • Oh, Catholic guilt.
  • Soul
    • Thank you Pixar and Pete Docter, for my latest existential crisis. It was brilliant. It also had some of Pixar's best animation, seamlessly mixing 2D into it's 3D world.
  • Promising Young Woman
    • I know this one is divisive, but I got what it was going after, and I would say more but this is a movie you should go in as cold as possible for.
  • I'm Your Woman
    • We finally get an answer to "what happens to the wife in gangster movies when the man has to go on the run?" And this is a pretty great answer.

And for fun, movies I saw for the first time this year:
  • Booksmart
  • Drinking Buddies
  • When Harry Met Sally
  • Ford v Ferrari
  • Skate Kitchen
  • Paddington 2
  • Bumblebee
  • Share
  • Dirty Dancing
  • The Fugitive
  • Monsters (2010)
  • The Other Guys
  • Fighting With My Family
